    Hotkeys

    Overview

Hotkeys are keyboard keys you can press to perform functions in Screen Monkey. If you wish to control Screen Monkey even when it isn't the active application, you must enable the Global Hotkeys option in the General section of the Screen Monkey settings.

With Global Hotkeys enabled, the key presses intended to control Screen Monkey should work while you are working in any application. This means that even if you are working in Windows Notepad the Screen Monkey Hotkey should work. This can be tremendously powerful as you do not have to worry about clicking on the Screen Monkey window for the Hotkey to work. However, this may cause problems if other applications are using the same hotkeys, as Screen Monkey will attempt to override them.

Be forewarned that enabling this function can make your keyboard seem as if certain keys no longer work. For example, if you have assigned the Arrow Left or Arrow Right keys to functions, Screen Monkey will intercept these keysrokes. You may be working in another application and notice the keys aren’t working as you believe they should be.

    * Items marked in bold are global hotkeys and will work whether the window is selected or not.

In addition to Screen Monkey being automatically configured with certain hotkeys, you may also choose to define your own Hotkeys for certain actions.

    How to configure a HotKey

    1. Open the Settings dialog and click the Mouse and Keyboard category.

    2. Expand the category of interest in the center section to reveal the actions.

For our example, we will expand the Audio Layer Playback.

    3. Select the desired action in the category.

For our example, we will select Volume Up.

Note that a red dot indicates the selection.

    4. Press the desired key or key combination to set the "trigger".

For our example, we will press Ctrl+Up Arrow.

Note that the sequence is presented at the top of the dialog.

    5. Double-click the selection to make the assignment.

Note that there will be nothing visible that happens. The dialog doesn't appear to change at all.

    6. Click the OK button to dismiss the dialog.

    7. Open the Settings dialog again and navigate to the Mouse and Keyboard settings.

    8. Expand the category again and note the difference!

    Removing Hotkeys

To remove a Hotkey, follow the same process as you do when adding one.

In Step 3 above, where you click the action to select it, click the Delete icon, then dismiss the dialog by clicking OK.

    Resetting Hotkeys to Default Values

If you have been monkeying around with your hotkeys just to see what you may accomplish, you may find yourself wondering what (if anything) you have messed up.

In this case it may be a good idea to reset things back to the "Just Installed" default values.

To reset to default, click the Reset icon.

Screen Monkey will prompt you with the following dialog:

Click OK and the default values should be reset.

    Saving and loading Hotkey assignments

Perhaps you are using Screen Monkey on multiple computers. If you change hotkey assignments it may be a cumbersome task to open the settings and make all the same edits over and over.

Fortunately Screen Monkey allows you to save the Hotkey assignments to an XML file that you may then transfer to the other computers and load in order to easily synchronize them!

To save the assignments, click the Diskette icon in the Settings window.

Screen Monkey will then present the Save As dialog where you will then type a name to identify the set of Hotkeys and click Save.

To LOAD a saved set of Hotkeys, click the Folder icon in the Settings window.

Screen Monkey will then present the Open dialog where you will then navigate to and select the set of Hotkeys and click Open.

    The keys are then loaded.
